PILATES LESSONS

Private and duet Pilates lessons

An instructor guiding a member on the apparatus at PAFGYM Pilates Apgujeong

Short answer

PAFGYM Pilates offers only private and duet lessons. A private lesson is a 1:1 session in which the instructor chooses apparatus and movements to suit one person's body; a duet lesson is a session two people, such as family, friends, or coworkers, take together as one team. If you are new or your physical condition needs close attention, private lessons are a good fit; if you have someone to attend with regularly, duet lessons suit well.

What equipment is used?

Pilates sessions fall into two broad types: mat and apparatus. In mat sessions your body leads the movement, using small props like balls, bands and foam rollers. Apparatus sessions use spring resistance and assistance, so the same movement can be made easier or harder.

The main apparatus used at PAFGYM Pilates are as follows.

How does a private lesson work?

A private lesson is 50 minutes. The first 5 minutes are preparation: breathing, postural alignment, and gently mobilizing the neck, upper back, and hips. The next 40 minutes are the main sequence, moving between apparatus such as the reformer, Cadillac, chair, and barrel and the mat to build core strength and coordination of the arms and legs. The final 5 minutes close with release.

Because the instructor works with only one person, spring tension, range, and speed can be adjusted for each movement as you go. It suits those who are new to exercise, those who need movements chosen carefully because of an area of discomfort, and those who want to focus over a short period.

How do duet lessons work?

A duet lesson is a session where two people form a team and learn together from one instructor. It uses the reformer, chair, ladder barrel, spring board, and various small props. We recommend it when you have someone you'd like to exercise with, such as a family member, friend, or colleague.

Having someone you've agreed to meet at the same time gives more motivation than you might expect. However, if the two of you differ greatly in fitness or goals, intensity has to be split within the same flow, so it helps to tell us about both of you at the first consultation.

Which lesson is right for me?

Use the guidelines below when choosing.

Can I use the space outside of sessions?

PAFGYM Pilates is a reservation-only studio, and use of the facility outside lesson times is limited. This preserves an environment where you can focus solely on your body and breath without crossing paths with others. Pilates is offered at Pilates Apgujeong and Pilates Dogok; lesson types and prices can be found in each studio's information.
